Lbr, Michael's draggings were worldwide throughout the media and never to do with his commercial power. He never underperformed realistically in album sales, he dropped his last studio record in 2001 and it opened to 363K and sold 10M copies in two years (one single with one TV special the day before 9/11 and no tour or other promo, coupled with Sony actively working against it), 14M by 2013 including posthumous sales. Number Ones and Essential Michael Jackson were his two major compilation releases of the 2000s and they were great sellers too, particularly Number Ones which crossed 12M WW before his death.
