A song being a hit is not one dimensional, just as much as you're saying it shouldnt rely solely on chart placement, you can't rely solely on sales or airplay either. Proof being 22 sold 2m+ yet it was clearly not a very big hit in terms of chart placement and its non-existent airplay. Im going to assume its sales are attributed to its use in coke commercials.

Except you don't just get to decide that sales AREN'T the main gauge of success in pop music. Singles are released 1) to be purchased 2) to fuel album sales. Ultimately all the matters is the amount of a money generated, which is why we have streaming included in single certifications + TEA and SEA to look at album success, but no inclusion of airplay. Who cares if a **** load of people were forced to hear HIAM if FEWER people bought and streamed it?
Also, you can't attribute its sales to any one thing. I could just as easily tell you how I heard 22 being played to death around campus (spring 2013), so now I'm going to attribute its sales to college parties. Even if you could definitively say "x sales came from the Coke commercial!" who ****ing cares? Sales are sales are sales, whether the song was promoted through a commercial or a performance at the Grammys or massive airplay or a controversial music video.
