SM tried it too much in 2011. They did Japan debut and tour, Korean album plus tour and US debut all in one year.

They should have left 2011 to focus on Japan only. But either way tensions in Japan killed off the Hallyu wave pretty quickly, and their popularity would have declined faster in Korea had they not released an album in that year.

The lower sales of the other 2 albums is probably because of the ban of Korean acts from music shows etc. in Japan.

The tours there slay though and they were able to sell out the Tokyo Dome.
