 True. Her fans were like animals during the BTW era. Not even like super shady or clever; just flat out mean and cold-spirited, which was ironic considering the immense number of them who were bullied and rejected in their real lives.
As far as stan culture goes, I think the main problem was that pop culture took a heavy hit after 2011. Seriously, NOTHING happened in 2012 aside from Madonna headlining the Super Bowl, whereas in 2007-2011, pop culture was extremely active and full of action at every corner, and not even just regarding pop singers. 
But in 2012, the hipsters started taking over, and completely bland, soulless, Whitebred acts like The Lumineers, fun., and Mumford & Sons started becoming the new "stars" people were listening to. And then people started crying out for "real" music to start being played, (which proved to just be boring crap that catered to Xanax patients), and the pop scene just faded.
