She's basically saying back in the day people embraced you regardless of whether or not you're a flop and thats simply not true.
It has never been socially acceptable to like someone who's on their way down/unpopular
also Even though there was no iTunes charts etc there were still ways you could measure success (spins, certifications, most extravagant videos etc etc)
