Lauryn Hill was that girl and it did wonders for her, the album (as we know) was on some 21 type **** at the time.
Alicia Keys was next and it also did wonders for her, being mixed and playing the piano helped obvi.
Others (Bey, Rih, Toni, Mariah, Whit) were more about looks, vocal talent (not rih) and crossover appeal.
Alicia and Lauryn would've made it anyway (dont know for how long) but yeah.
