Applause clearly.
Anaconda shot up so quickly because of streaming and when the hype died down, so did the song and it shot all the way down to the pits of hell. No longevity, the definition of a quick provocative viral hit. Nothing more.

Because of the video though. The song was a moderate hit. Nothing more.
But since it was a bigger hit than Applause TPP should open higher than ARTPOP, right?

Well, let's look at the numbers.
Applause

- Sweden: 20,000
- Venezuela: 20,000
- New Zealand: 7,500
Streams - VEVO: 194,314,176 views
- Spotify: 77,459,928 plays
Anaconda
Peaks - US: #2
- Japan: N/A
- Germany: #48
- UK: #3
- France: #38
- Australia: #8
- Canada: #3
- Italy: N/A

Anaconda had more social impact (due to its content and um...revealing music video that made headlines) but Applause sold more and had more longevity overall, so Applause.

The one that is 2X platinum and didn't get to the top 10 because of streaming but with actual sales.

'Anaconda' had a bigger video but that didn't translate to radio play or sales.
'Applause' lasted longer, sold more, received more airplay, etc.
So obviously 'Applause', unless ATRL has yet again decided to change its logic when it comes to what makes a song a bigger hit than another song.

Applause both in the US and WW by far.
Anaconda didn't even outsell DWUW in the US, let alone WW.

Phenomenon? I think the appropriate term would be "viral hit" and even if it were bigger than applause, how come it sold less

1. Sales were bigger last year
2. Anaconda is a hip hop song

Yeah... a better example of a phenomenon would be 'Bad Romance', which not only went viral but is diamond certified in the US, won more awards than any other recent single, won a Grammy, etc. All 'Anaconda' accomplished was Vevo certified.

You guys keep saying it's a rap song while ignoring that most of its beat is a sample from one of the most well-known pop songs in history.
Gaga's "one second I'm a Koons then suddenly the Koons is me" line makes 'Applause' more off-putting than 'Anaconda' being a "rap song".

I love Applause, but it's already forgotten. The fact is that YouTube virality is a good measure of how many people in the target market are listening to the song. Anaconda is the bigger cultural hit. It's the one you hear at every college party.

Clearly Applause.
Anaconda was a short viral hit. I actually set my expectations so high for the song's chart performance but fell so short.
I can't believe it only sold 1.2Million only 300k more of Work Bitch...
Also, Applause is the better song by miles.
