There's a certain amount of pop "bop" realness to it and yet they have so much more fluid instruments in terms of sounds. Like take the beginning of R2R, it starts off midtempo before going uptempo. The chorus is amazing in this regard. Even the melodic arrangement of Fireproof has that "California highway driving with windows down" vibe that feels authentic.
I actually enjoy this side of the boys more. It feels like a sound they were aiming for. It feels more real because I can hear it in the songs.
The problem I had with MM is that its sound is so dated and rock is generally its own harshest critic. It's not a sound that evolves very well.
