The price of movie tickets has far outpaced inflation.
Clearing $1 billion in 2014, when movie tickets regularly cost $9 or more is way easier than doing the same in 1936 when a movie ticket cost 25 cents, or about $4.22 in 2014 dollars.

I think a lot of websites use tickets sold over overall gross (but even that has an unfair advantage to older movies too.. so there is a slight curve both ways, with modern movies out grossing some older movies because of added investments like ticket prices and 3D). It's a huge testament that
Titanic sold a **** ton of tickets though. That is probably going to be our last film phenomena for a looooong time.
