I really dunno why people make such a complicated issue of what is really just a consistent measurement of market share applied as a point of comparison/frame of reference.

There are X number of sales overall in a given year; Album A represents Y percentage of the total sales (X) for 2014, while Album B represented Z percentage of the total sales (X) for 2000.

Sure, she would have sold more (if her music was consistent with the flavor of that era), but diamond status?
That kind of extrapolation would make 21 the most successful album of all time.
