I actually noticed this too! It's probably because of the teen pop overload; R&B, rap, and hip-hop (artists who are mostly black) for the most part is the complete opposite of teen pop.

I rember when everyone made fun of the California Dreams tore its gross. I always said that this was her first tore, so she was charging modest prices and laying the framework for her next tore.

I said her next tore would be huge. And it kind of is.

Well, rhythmic radio was heavily weighted, and I think urban was too. But to go against that point, those black artists were legit successful. OutKast, Usher, 50 Cent, Beyonce, Mariah, Ciara, Ashanti, Nelly and a slew of others had legit big hits and album sales to back up. I just think that urban/rhythmic-leaning artists truly dominated here in the US, but I still feel that impact could be felt in the '90s too.
