Things were so perfect. My dad was not a fan of any of them, though. The only female artists he really likes are Aretha Franklin, Pat Benatar and Heart (specifically Nancy Wilson).

That's how things used to work. You had to buy a single to sample music and 9/10 only really liked major label artists. Most labels became famous for sounds, so if you bought an album/single from a white person from JIVE, it would be because you expected it to be teen-pop/bubblegum pop.
On top of that, a lot of late 90s singers were already on TV/shows before blowing up. J. Lo was on Living Color, Britney was on NMMC and Star Search (a big deal), Beyonce was on Star Search with Girl's Tyme, Usher was on Star Search, Christina was on NMMC and Star Search. As long as you didn't win Star Search, you were almost guaranteed to be destined for some kind of fame.
