Microsoft will deliver an early "Windows Technical Preview" in early October that will be updated regularly with new features for enterprise customers and enthusiasts to test ahead of a full launch next year. While Microsoft has been hinting at its future Windows naming, it’s expected to announce the official name of the next version of Windows at its event. That will likely be Windows 9, but the company may also opt for just Windows or an entirely different brand. If Microsoft doesn’t name its next version of Windows tomorrow, then it will likely refer to it as just "Windows Threshold" or "Windows TH," the codename the company uses internally. Microsoft’s small event won’t be a product launch or a big unveiling, instead it’s more of a chance for the company to prove to loyal Windows users that things are changing.

It will be a free upgrade for Windows 8/8.1 devices.

Um. Software updates of Windows operating systems have always been free.

The only thing that is not free is when you're switching from an older version of Windows to a new one.

Windows Operating Systems usually lasts 8-10 years of support. Also, with buying a new PC you can always just upgrade parts unlike with Mac, when the OS doesn't support the hardware, you usually are forced to buy a new one.

Before you post some excuses, Apple is a device company while Microsoft is a software company which means Apple makes money through their devices while Windows makes money through their operating system. #knowthediff

I'm interested in knowing if they'll stay as an OS-based company or if they'll branch out and launch more devices of their own. They started with the Surface and the 830 and 730. This will be interesting.

I just got 8.1 about 3 weeks ago and I'm already pretty used to it, I love my little start screen with all the app buttons around. I honestly don't think I'm gonna accept the free upgrade.
