David Bowie released his first single on January 8, 2013
David Bowie's album was released March 8, 2013.

Where was there a surprise release? Is it because he released it one day before it was supposed to come out? That is not the same. Explain it to me if you think I've gotten it wrong.

On January 7 David Bowie unleashed this on the internet to celebrate his 66th birthday. Where Are We Now was his first release in a decade, and came with the promise of a full album, The Next Day, two months later.
