I don't see the correlation between being independent and being powerful. It's not as if Gaga is doing the work for herself that Matthew did. She has a team just like anyone else.

Basically I just don't think that social media/video views means you are powerful. Popular, yes. Powerful not necessarily.

I don't know if there is anyone more worthy than Gaga. I wasn't posting my original comment to downplay Gaga, I was just meaning to comment on the criteria. But I do admit Gaga doesn't seem like she should be #1, and yet as you say, who else? Perhaps she is the most powerful compared to other popular stars because she actually does things in a forward-thinking kind of way, and really gets involved in something when she puts her heart to it. If all of the popstars (sans Beyoncé) said, "GET BEHIND ME! WE'RE DOING THIS!" I'd trust Gaga the most. If this even makes sense.

Well yes of course. There are many types of power. But you can't only be socially powerful and therefore be the most powerful. That disregards all the rest of the criteria you yourself have admitted exists. Plus, social power has a much shorter shelf life. I mean, the ALS challenge was EVERYWHERE and now no one at all is talking about it. Compare that to the power that Hilary Clinton has been able to sustain for so many years, and you can see the difference between social and political power. Unless you own a social platform it's really not a super powerful medium.

Kim Kardashian has millions of followers, gets millions of likes, retweets, etc. She is on people's minds. She drives a lot of page views and comments. But does she hold power because of this or do the public hold her power?
