They don't report those for cable.
MTV reported that the ratings peaked at 12.9 million in 2013 during Justin's Vanguard medley but they issued a separate press release last year since the ratings skyrocketed.

The entire show was boring, uninspired and low budget for the most part except Beyonce. She was the best thing about the show.
Since BET did better this year I say next year bring more black entertainers on the show. We need more diversity again.

The encore presentation of the show on MTV last night earned an additional 2.8 million total viewers, amounting to 12.9 million total viewers across both airings on MTV.
Performer - Lady gaga, Miley cyrus, Robin thinke, 2chainz, kendrick lamar, kanye west, justin timberlake with nsync, mackemore&ryan lewis, mary lambart, jennifer hudson, drake, bruno mars, katy perry.
2014
9pm + 11pm re-run =12.045m
13.7m including other nets run.
Performer - beyonce, taylor swift, usher, maroon5, sam smith, 5sos, Ariana Grande, jessi j, nicki minaj, iggy azalea, rita ora
So no bad afterall consiering lack of big names and not much diversity.

They are claiming that the whole Hive said that Bey is enough to increase the ratings from last year?
I honestly didn't see one post but prove me receipt where every Hive member said that.
Plus, why would the Hive be pressed when Bey's performance is reviewed and covered on multiple news sites and articles, has a sales increase on the album and multiple songs and gave us one beautiful 15minute performance? Hmmm...

So the total viewers were about the same 
With encores on MTV and sister nets, the show took a total of 13.7 million viewers over the course of the night.
Not bad

Yes, I remember last year how EVERYONE was talking about the Applause performance. No one cared about Miley Cyrus et al, all the ratings were thanks to Gaga.
