VMAs have always been a very "of-the-moment" thing. They go for whoever is on top, but that show is so going to bomb in ratings. I wouldn't be surprised if they're under the BET Awards like in 2012.

Their target audience is young people, the most important thing for them is to get as many people in their target audience to watch it, that's how they make themselves as attractive as possible to marketers.
The real question isn't which of the two (BET vs VMA) get the biggest ratings, but which of the two can demand the most money for ads. Aslo, Usher is a flop now and nobody cares.
