I remember vividly rolling stone gave a 1 or 2 stars out of five but for some reason they changed it or something after success happened.

TEOM was never a critics darling. The Grammy's loved it, but the critics were just postive about the return to the throwback style and the cohesiveness (kinda) of the album.
It wasn't a flop coming in. Shake It Off was a top 20 hit and the album sold like 400K+ First week.
