I hope that amongst the more meaningful, honest tracks Kesha serves a This Is How We Do type ANTHEM on her next record. Kesha would literally slay that song (perhaps even better than Katy).
Might be one of her all-time best bridges... "Put your motherf***** phones up, light em' up"
It totally is. V underrated song and bridge. Gets too much hate for being "generic" (which it's not - not all dance music is generic! The chorus GOES AWF).
Looking back on her discography, "Crazy Beautiful Life" is kind of lyrically similar to "This Is How We Do". As always, Kesha is always a step ahead of Katy (from "TiK ToK" to "California Gurls" and "Thinking of You" to "International Smile"). Even the production on Teenage Dream is a sanitised take on Animal. Katy is like an inoffensive, polished and less polarising Kesha.

You have a point here.
Although there have been many claims that Kesha is the protype and Katy is the final product in terms of Dr. Luke and his production, I don't necessarily agree and feel that there is some kind of connection but not in that way. Luke himself has is own way of adjusting. Katy's earlier songs with Luke such as "I Kissed A Girl" and "Hot N Cold" were essentially similar to his work with Kelly Clarkson, P!nk and Avril Lavigne at the time. When Gaga came along and dance music blew up, Luke knew he needed to adapt, and that's when Kesha's sound was discovered. When 'Teenage Dream' came around, it was more of an artistic progression than a "Must copy TiK ToK's success" I feel. People drag Katy for using Kesha's and Bonnie's style, and that her OOTB era sound was flawless, but pop-rock wasn't working anymore (as can be seen with what has happened to Avril Lavigne's career). If Katy hadn't evolved, she'd definitely not be where she is today. I'm not denying that California Gurls is very similar to TiK ToK, because it is. But not for the reasons what most people believe. It has the same producer and that sound was hot. Katy is a pop star at the end of the day, and keeping up with the times isn't anything new.
I'd argue that "Thinking Of You" and "International Smile" are hardly similar at all, aside from the vocoder in the bridge, which is reminiscent of the sax in Katy's "Last Friday Night" anyway. One could similarly say that Kesha copied Katy with the title "Thinking Of You", or she tried to have a Katy Perry sounding hit with the Bonnie McKee penned "C'Mon". But obviously we know this isn't true.
"Crazy Beautiful Life" was one of my faves from Cannibal for ages (perhaps for similar reasons to TIHWD?) but it's so unfinished, imo. It seems like a demo, almost. But I can definitely agree that there are similarities there too.

She would slay it actually
Oh and on the California Gurls/Tik Tok thing (I never wrote it TiK ToK, maybe I should? ) I never heard it until i saw a video online like months after California Gurls was out actually, CG was one of my most played songs and I bopped along all that summer

I've just always called it "TiK ToK" out of habit. That's how it is on the album, so that's how I spell it.
But yeah, I'm the same. I didn't hear and agree with the similarities / comparisons until long after CG was originally released. I mean, it's not THAT noticeable and they're not THAT similar. But you can definitely sing one over the other.

Interesting post. But in terms of Kesha's sound, who do you think was responsible for developing it? Did Luke and RCA sit in a boardroom and say "Lady Gaga is doing dance music – let's create our own Lady Gaga or capitalise on her sound"? That's a popular theory by the Little Monsters. I don't agree or disagree with it, but it's something I've thought about.
Perhaps "TiK ToK" was Luke's take on the reemergence of dance-pop. Maybe he found that to be a winning formula and adapted it for Katy's record? As you can hear though, Katy's sound is less brash and electronic than Kesha's.
And yes, "Crazy Beautiful Life" does sound unfinished. I think it's a good song that had the potential to be great. Perhaps if the chorus was more explosive, I'd enjoy it more. It's a just bit flat and underwhelming compared to her other tracks.
Well, I mean just looking at her demos that she recorded prior to the Animal era's commencement it's clear to see that Kesha was making far more country and rock influenced pop music than what ended up on 'Animal'. Furthermore, Luke didn't take any interest in Kesha until "Right Round" blew up. So actual work on the concept of what was to be her album began sometime in early 2009. That doesn't mean that she didn't have tracks for the album before that, but chances are they wouldn't have been put on any album unless "Right Round" blew up when it did, and would remain demos, like many of her songs are. As Lady Gaga was the "it" artist from 2008-2009, it was definitely in Luke's mind to take a similar direction. RCA doesn't really have anything to do with her as far as I know. They're just the distributors, iirc. She's mainly Luke and Kemosabe. So I wouldn't say that Luke or Kesha consciously wanted to be the new Lady Gaga or anything, but they definitely were trying to replicate her success with releasing similar dance music with an edgier, more electronic sound, paired with Kesha's unique sing-talk style, that was enough to distance her from being an exact carbon copy or anything. And it worked, because they were able to coexist throughout 2009 and 2010.
Thanks. I'm now ashamed that I spent legitimate cold, hard cash on this ridiculous site but I also bought coins on that stupid Kim Kardashian game so basically I'm a money-wasted, contributing-to-the-decline-of-humanity MESS.
But at least with flawless music taste.
Glad you like my new username! It matches my twitter name.

This video makes it really easy to hear.
Omg that video That person deserved those 2 million views for an amazing job like that
The Cali Gurls stanning up in here. But I don't do choreo. I'm not that gay.
'Warrior' was actually the first album that I purchased with my own money... along with the Deconstructed EP (in the fan pack). A bit late to start buying records, but discovering ATRL sometime in late 2012 during the lead-up to Warrior really changed my views on purchasing music. I used to think only idiots purchased music when you can just get it for free. Of course now I like to support all of my faves; I've purchased all of my faves' albums since 2012 - Warrior, PRISM and, yes, even ARTPOP. I also went back and purchased all of Kesha's old records since she's my main fave, but I REALLY need to get myself a copy of 'Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection' and 'The Fame Monster' (reissue) seeing as they're two of my favourite albums from those artists. I'll be purchasing The Pink Print and #R8 when they're released too, and most likely Bonnie McKee's album, if it ever comes out.
But #K3 is my main priority! I need that in my life!
I would never buy music from major acts, aside from the fact that I don't like most of them, my money is better spent supporting smaller acts so they don't get dropped. My copies of Natalias Perfectionist and Trouble look so nice in my room
I love doing choreo. I'm extremely gay tbh. I'm a glitter lover and stuff
