Earlier in the day MTV took to their social media accounts (instagram, twitter, facebook) to post a picture hyping a "very special" edition of "MTV Unplugged". MTV Unplugged is a series in which musicians perform acoustic or "unplugged" versions of their familiar electric repertoire. Britney Spears let fans know hours prior to the 8/7 Central showing that she would be doing something "very special" tonight. Fans linked the posts by MTV and Spears and trended #BritneyMTVUnplugged about an hour before the show. Britney then took to twitter to confirm by changing her icon/header to match the MTV poster for the show, she tweeted "excited to be doing MTV Unplugged tonight, for all of you who constantly say I can't sing.. tune in!". People were shocked by the tweet and many tuned in to see if the pop princess would prove anything on the show. MTV also promoted the Unplugged special throughout the hour prior to the show on TV and bought a YouTube banner to promote the show. The "Britney Spears: Unplugged" special brought in 8.6 million viewers.
The Special
The special took place on a small circular stage/intimate setting. There was a small crowd for the show and the special was pre-recorded rather than live as Britney was on tour in Italy while the special aired. The special was one hour long and Britney did 9 songs in total, 8 off of her new "American Dream" album. To set the mood, she started with a classic hit not on the "American Dream" album, prior to singing each song she changed her outfit and told a story about how the song came about, the performances were basic with minimal dancing as Britney was focusing all her energy on showing her vocal prowess.
...Baby One More Time
"I didn't write this song, actually, but I remember hearing it for the first time in the studio as a demo that Max Martin sent to me... and I just immediately fell in love with it. The second I heard it, I pictured the video with the schoolgirl outfit, I heard my voice to the track, I knew it was going to be one of the biggest songs of my career if I recorded it, I knew it had to be my first song, there was no other song that could compare. I love this song so much and I'm happy that I was able to record it.. here's ...Baby One More Time"
Britney wore the iconic schoolgirl outfit as she sang this one with two back up dancers doing the BOMT choreo, she did some of the choreo when the instrumental was playing but didn't do much choreography.
Gimme Your Best
"I wrote this song and recorded it in the studio a few days before it was released.. I finished the album and was picking the tracklist and 1st single when I got a call from Pepsi and Fifa. They wanted to do a commercial with me for the world cup and they wanted my lead single on the commercial so I went through the album and nothing really fit for a world cup commercial but I also didn't want to make it based off the world cup so I spent a few days thinking and I finally came up with Gimme Your Best, the part of the song used in the ad makes sense for the world cup but the song doesn't revolve around it. I'm glad I wrote it because It's one of my favorite songs off the American Dream album."
Britney wore a crop top + jeans outfit for this performance as men in suits surrounded her, she pushed them away as she walked around the stage avoiding them while singing "Gimme Your Best" completely live, the instrumental was transformed from an electric sound to a simple chord progression on the piano for the unplugged performance.
Where'd The Good Times Go?
"This song doesn't really follow any situation I've really been in but it does represent my emotions for losing "the one" and losing a lot of potential good times I could've enjoyed. I got very emotional after shaving my head and I actually wrote this song that night while looking at some old pictures I really love and treasure.. here is Where'd The Good Times Go?"
Britney sang this song while sitting down at the piano wearing a long white wedding gown while smoke surrounded the stage. She played the song on the piano herself and no other instruments were played, her vocals were on point throughout the performance.
Take You Down ft. Kelly Clarkson
"I wrote this song with Kelly actually, after I met her for the first time.. she's the sweetest girl and she was so nice to me, I did a little concert with her and after that she actually spent the night at my house and we wrote the song together all night, we were both so excited to be working together"
Britney worse a black top + pant outfit for "Take You Down" as she sang the first minute alone walking around the smoke covered stage. Out of nowhere, the absent Kelly Clarkson came onto the stage from the audience and sang the second half of the song with Britney. The girls hugged at the end of the performance and Kelly blew brit a kiss as she walked off stage and into the audience to enjoy the rest of the show.
Body To Body
"I wrote this one in bed early morning, I had a really vivid uhm dream during the night and I woke up thinking about it and that's kinda how the song came about. It's a very sexy song so it only makes sense that it was written after experiencing a pretty good dream if you know what I mean.."
Britney sang Body To Body with a guitar. People were shocked to see that Britney knew how to play the guitar, fire shot up around the stage during the performance as Britney moved around a lot to touch the fans in the crowd. Britney was wearing skinny jeans and a beige crop top.
Bad Girls (We Do It Betta) ft. Miley Cyrus
"Miley & I wrote this one in the studio together, we knew we wanted to do a song together since we're close family friends and we were making music at the same time so we just got in the studio with a bunch of producers and spent hours writing and making sure the song was as good as it could be."
Miley and Britney performed this song wearing ****ty lingerie outfits with grey robes, they sang the song live together as Miley twerked on stage. Miley touched Britney's body as she sang and they both moved around the stage and interacted with the crowd
Naughty Or Nice
"Naughty Or Nice I wrote with Max Martin in the studio. I just know that I can be both you know everybody can be naughty or nice and there's two sides to every person whether you let both sides come out in general, that's up to you. I try to maintain a nice side for the most part but I let both sides come out in the bedroom and thats what the song is really about, being naughty or nice when you're getting down and dirty.."
Britney's outfit was very original as it was a lace lingerie set, half was white and the other half was read, she also had a head prop on, half was a halo and the other half was a devil horn. She wore one white latex boot and one red latex boot. She also had white eyeshadow over one of her eyes and red eyeshadow over the other. Britney sang the song live while she danced heavily to the track, the vocals weren't the best of the night but she still did very well. Britney blew "fairy dust" into the air during "nice parts" and rose her hands up as fire came out of the stage during the "naughty parts".
Sweet (Like A Lollipop)
"I love this next song.. I thought of the lyrics when I was playing Candyland, it was very weird but they just came to me and I ended up writing them down and fixing them up with Max in the studio.. it's not about what everybody thinks it's about after seeing the title, it's about me being sweet like a lollipop, not anything else!"
Britney wore a red/white striped leotard with two circular lollipops over her boobs. She sat on a large lollipop prop with cotton candy surrounding it as she sang the song fully live, she also licked a pink lollipop during the performance.
Touchin' Me w/ Rihanna
"This is without a doubt one of my favorite songs off the American Dream record.. It wasn't written by me, though. It was initially written by Junglepussy, Azealia Banks, and Céline Dion. When I realized I wanted Rihanna to be on it, she came to the studio and we rewrote parts of the song and added our own sexy vibe to it.. it's the #1 song right now and I just wanna thank everybody for that! I also wanna thank Rihanna for promoting it with me and taking time out of her schedule to do so, sadly we won't be able to do the same this week as Rihanna is busy but I still love this song very much and I'm glad you guys love it too.."
Rihanna came out from underneath the stage, the crowd was very surprised. The gurls were both wearing catsuits as they sang "Touchin Me" fully live. Their vocals were incredible and on point as they touched each other during parts of the song, they also did some flexible back bends and Britney did a back handspring. The vocals were great and once the song was over the girls did a huge dance break to an unplugged upbeat instrumental. Britney thanked everyone for sticking around for the full hour special as she blew a kiss to the camera. The special then faded to credits as a voice said "Buy Britney's new #1 album "American Dream" out in stores everywhere now & check MTV.com for recorded audio of tonight's unplugged special"
I'm just j/k sis Lemme hope for Britney to have longevity on the charts
