I don't believe Alejandro ruined her. It was the start of a mess, but clearly she rebounded. The hype for BTW alone...imagine if she had released a good song like TEOG as the lead. What ruined her was attaching meaningless imagery to meaningful songs that no one could connect point A to point B. As a result people stopped trying to understand her and just started to see her as obnoxious. Judas, being a gimmick, only made it worse.

Alejandro video was lame but people still cared about her afterwards. BTW era killed her career, which is a shame because the album is monumental.

IKR? TEOG would've been huge! The whole world was anticipating the first single. And she released BTW, one of her most "normal" songs.

Alejandro was still the beginning of the end. She was just too blinded by her own fame to realize that her career was in jeopardy and didn't think she was on a slippery slope. The Express Yourself controversy made the lead single more socially relevant than it would have been otherwise. I agree that an amazing pop song would have been a good way to start the era off with, but... In a way, it's more important that she got to get the message she wanted out there.

Otherwise, she'd still be preaching about the persecution of gays rather than the persecution of artistic people

And how did I miss all the Marry the Night talk from earlier? It's her best song in my opinion. The bridge especially is outstanding and a high in her career. Truly the deserved smash that got away. It will forever hold a place in my heart (and iPod) though.
