I believe 2010-2011 ratings had a lot to with her, since she was huge back then.
2013 was just a more star-studded show than 2012 was. Gaga contributed to that a bit, but she was not the sole reason.

Especially from now on, whether Gaga attends or not will likely not have almost any impact on the ratings.

All those years with higher ratings had a controversy though, from Kanye crashing Taylor's stage, to Gaga's meat dress to Beyonce's pregnancy announcement, to Miley's provocative twerking on a married man twice her age.

2012 didn't have low ratings because Gaga didn't attend. 2012 had low ratings because literally nothing happened. It was just a bunch of awards being given out. Katy kissed a One Direction member on the cheek. Big whoop.

You can't exactly attribute the shock surprises Bey and Miley delivered to explain the ratings. Those things are unanticipated unlike people who are ostensibly used to hype and promote the show (i.e., Gaga's 2013 comeback)

I think for the 2009 show you forgot the Kanye/Tay/Bey incident, for the 2011 show you forgot Beyoncé pregnancy anouncment and for the 2013 show you forgot that Miley did her thing with Robin Thicke
