NEW MOM AGUILERA WOWS AT THE VMAS!
One-time pop rivals and former MICKEY MOUSE CLUB darlings CHRISTINA AGUILERA and BRITNEY SPEARS were the toast of Hollywood on Sunday night (07Sep08) at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Spears opened the show with a toast to the prizegiving on its 25th anniversary and went on to pick up her first three VMA 'moonmen' prizes for her Piece of Me video.
And new mum Christina Aguilera stole the show with her comeback; in what was her first public performance since becoming a mum in January (08), the busty blonde showed off her new X-Men-style look and disco sound.
Wearing black leather and a black eye mask, the Genie in a Bottle singer stunned with new single Keeps Getting Better.
Other performers, like Pink, T.I. and the Jonas Brothers used the VMAs' Paramount Pictures site to launch into tunes from the studio's backlot.
And the night was full of live collaborations - Kid Rock performed his summer anthem All Summer Long with Lil Wayne, while Rihanna and T.I. teamed up and Leona Lewis tackled the Animals' Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood with Lil Wayne.
Kanye West brought the climax to the show a year after insisting he'd never return to the event after his treatment at the 2007 VMAs in Las Vegas.

The red carpet of the Video Music Awards was its own kind of eye popping spectacle, but during the show I couldn't take my eyes off Britney Spears. And I wasn't the only one, She had at least two bodyguards watching over her the whole time. At one point a fan tried to approach her but one of the guys gently told him to beat it.
Taylor Swift got better treatment, however, and just walked over to chat with Brit, who then posed for pics and gabbed with the Jonas Brothers. Britney gave a hug and kiss to her former bodyguard, Big Rob, who now works for the Jonas Brothers.
Even though Britney won her first VMA early in the show for best female video (and two more later) she seemed pretty mellow over all.
After the show, Britney took a walk through the lot to Stage 11 where the press was waiting for her. As she walked through, she was like the piper piper....press and fans were following her like mice...and more and more people kept joining the herd that was following her. If was a like a fairy tale, but one that ended abruptly.
One moment she was getting touched up in a make up mirror just outside the press area…and then she was gone, whisked into a photo-only area where no pesky questions could be asked. Who could blame her for that (besides me, of course). She looked fab, kept it together and seems like she's getting her career back on the good foot.
Brava Britney!

US-Britney Spears Sweeps VMAs, Thanks "My Beautiful Boys for Inspiring Me"
Britney Spears got off to a good start at Sunday's 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, scoring laughs during her opening and winning her first ever "moonman."
She kicked off the show with Superbad's Jonas Hill in a pre-taped skit, where he tried to teach her some relaxation techniques.
He ordered her to close her eyes. When she did, he leaned in and tried to kiss her. "What is your deal?" she shrieked.
"I care about the VMAs being good," he replied in the humorous skit. After the segment, Spears, in sexy, sparkly halter dress, walked on stage as her hit "Baby One More Time" blared. The audience stood and applauded.
"Thank you so much," she told the crowd. "Thank you for all the love. This is the 2008 Video Music Awards, and it starts right now."
Spears then playfully stuck out her tongue, and Rihanna hit the stage and performed her hit "Disturbia."
After a quick opening by host Russell Brand -- he urged the crowd, "Please elect Barack Obama," and called President Bush a "retarded cowboy fella" -- Spears returned to the stage again to collect her first ever "moonman" for Best Female Video for "Piece of Me."
"I'm speechless. Oh, my goodness, thank you!" an elated Spears told the crowd. "I first wanna thank God for blessing me like this. My family ... my two beautiful boys for inspiring me everyday."
She later took home the award for Best Pop Video, saying she was "speechless" and thanking her longtime manager, Larry Rudolph.
She closed out the night by winning Video of the Year.
"I'm in shock right now," she said. "I want to dedicate this to all my fans."

PEOPLE-Britney Wins First Video Music Award
Britney was back in fighting form at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday night – opening the show and nabbing her first win.
A nervous Britney Spears opened the 25th edition of the VMAs, live from Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, in a vintage silver Versace mini-dress after being escorted from her nearby dressing room.
Spears took center stage, clutched the microphone tight, and announced, "I'm here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday." Continued Spears: "This is the 25th Video Music Awards – and it starts right now."
With that, the pop star was gone, ceding the stage to a futuristic-looking Rihanna, who launched into her hit "Disturbia" with a goth-themed entourage touting glow sticks and leather.
Moments later, Spears was back to accept her first VMA ever.
Nominated for 16 Moonmen in the past, the pop star nabbed best female video for her song "Piece of Me." A grateful Spears gave a brief speech, thanking God for "just blessing me like this," calling out her two sons and dedicating the award to her fans. "This is for you," Spears said.
And her fans were everywhere Sunday night. Haley Williams from Paramore saw Spears backstage and was overheard remarking to a bandmate, "Man, Britney looks really pretty."
Host Russell Brand seemed to stun the audience with his high-minded, political comedy, making jokes at the expense of President George Bush ("In England, George Bush wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors") and remarks about nominees the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings.
Second award of the night went to Chris Brown – best male video for his "With You" video.
One unique factor about this year's show: The diversity of performance spots. The Jonas Brothers offered a stripped down, acoustic version of their song "Love Bug" on a city street set, before launching into an electric finale on a stage that was mobbed by adoring teenage fans.
Rockers Paramore performed from legendary rock club Whisky A Go Go, but were bested by Linkin Park for best rock video honors.

AP-One More Time: Britney sweeps MTV VMAs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It took a year, but Britney Spears' comeback on the MTV Video Music Awards is finally a reality.
Spears nabbed all three VMAs she was nominated for, including video of the year, and made triumphant appearance in an atttempt to erase the career-low of last year's ceremony.
Spears didn't perform. Still, just being there was enough for a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd long before she opened her mouth to get things rolling.
Maybe the audience was simply excited to see a glimpse of Britney looking fab once again. The rebounding pop queen wore a short silver mini-dress with a plunging neckline, showcasing her svelte figure.
It was a far cry from last year, when her dishelveled, bumbling kickoff was widely panned.

USA Today: Britney finds love, success at VMAs
HOLLYWOOD — Her live number lasted less than 20 seconds, but Britney Spears still got a standing ovation at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards. And she got the big win: video of the year.
After a taped comedic skit — in which actor Jonah Hill failed repeatedly to kiss the pop star — Spears hurried in from backstage at the Paramount Theater. The crowd erupted. "Thank you so much. Thank you for all the love," Spears, 26, said before introducing the 25th anniversary show in very matter-of-fact fashion.
It was a safe showing for Spears, whose performance on last year's VMAs was nearly universally derided. But this year, she was fit and coherent, reading her lines with few breaks.
She got to take home prizes, too. Three of them. The first award of the evening — best video by a female — went to Spears for Piece of Me. She thanked God, her "beautiful boys and my fans. This is for you." She also won in the pop category and closed the show with video of the year, varying her thank-you speech only slightly each time.
Spears, whose exact role had been under wraps, was the talk of the show even before it started. "I'm ready to see Britney," said Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy, singer Katy Perry's beau. "I've been through tough times myself. There's no instruction manual for all this." "I love Britney, and I want her to take over the world again," said country singer Taylor Swift. Another fan: Chris Brown. "I'll hopefully be working with her soon," he said. "I'm working on a new album but have been so busy writing for other people."
British comedian Russell Brand was host and made several quips about the Jonas Brothers' abstinence pledge and his deep desire to have Barack Obama elected president. The Jonases performed, as did Lil Wayne, Kid Rock, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and T-Pain.
Presenters also wowed the crowd. Among them: Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Ciara, Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps and the cast of High School Musical 3. The format was very different, as artists performed at various venues throughout the Paramount lot, with the theater as the main stage. Linkin Park's Joe Hahn said, "The vibe inside is great. And I love DJ AM and Travis Barker as the house band."
Hip-hop artist Kanye West, who famously vowed last year never to appear on the awards show again after failing to win, went back on his word. West, who even made fun of the tantrum he threw backstage last year on an episode of Saturday Night Live, was the closing act.
Before the broadcast, the signature MTV VMAs circus overtook the red carpet. T-Pain, in a bright red leather top hat and jacket, arrived riding an elephant, surrounded by clowns and acrobats. Members of the band Tokio Hotel drove up in a giant monster truck.
Veterans were just as excited as newcomers. "I'm excited to see everyone," said producer Jermaine Dupri. "I think it will be better than last year's."

Vancouver Sun: Britney Spears sweeps at MTV Awards
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A year after her disastrous comeback attempt at the MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears swept the event on Sunday, winning the first three "Moonman" statuettes of her career. The pop singer, whose career has been overshadowed in recent years by a litany of personal woes, took home the awards for video of the year, best pop video and best female video, all for the tune "Piece of Me. "I'm in shock right now," the starlet said, after taking the stage for the third time to receive the coveted video-of- the-year award.
In her brief acceptance speeches, she doled out multiple thanks to God, her family and her fans. But the 25th annual broadcast of the lifestyle cable channel's flagship bash did not begin promisingly for Spears. After weeks of speculation, the channel announced last week that Spears would open the ceremony and promised some surprises. In the end, all she did was deliver four sentences, shielding her lower face with her microphone. "Thank you so much. Thank you for all the love. I'm here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday, the 25th anniversary of the VMAs. This is the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and it starts right now."
Other winners included R&B singer Chris Brown's "With You" for best male video, Linkin Park's "Shadow of the Day" for best rock video, and rapper Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" for best hip-hop video.

ET: Britney Finally Gets a 'Piece' of the VMA's
Putting years of nominations and no wins behind her, Britney Spears broke the streak by winning three VMA awards including tonight's most coveted award for best female music video for "Piece of Me." "To my fans, this is for you," she said upon accepting the award. "Thank you so much." Earlier in the night when she picked up her first award Britney thanked God and her two boys for inspiring her.

Access Hollywood: Britney’s Comeback: Three VMAs!
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Moments after kicking off the 25th annual MTV “Video Music Awards” on Sunday night, Britney Spears returned to the stage – to claim her first Moonman!
Brit, looking stunning in a silver mini-dress, took home the award for Best Female Video for “Pieces of Me.” The pop star went on to win all three of her nominations.
Brit also picked up the trophies for Best Pop Video and the VMAs’ biggest award, Video of the Year. She had been nominated for 16 VMAs over the years, however, these were her first wins. “First I want to thank God,” she said as she took the stage to accept her the trophy for Best Female Video. “[And] my two beautiful boys for inspiring me every day and my fans, this is for you. Thank you so much!”

Billboard: Britney Bounces Back With Three VMA Wins
Britney Spears returned to the MTV Video Music Awards in a major way tonight (Sept. 7) in Los Angeles, getting the last laugh after a disastrous 2007 appearance by winning the first three awards of her career: female video, pop video and video of the year for "Piece of Me."
Spears was the talk of the 2007 VMAs for all the wrong reasons following her lethargic performance of "Gimme More" as part of the opening segment. But she was a picture of professionalism and poise this time around, as she introduced the show and appeared in a comedic pre-show sketch with actor Seth Rogen. She also guested in several promo ads with host Russell Brand.
"Wow. I'm in shock right now. I was not expecting this!," Spears said after accepting the video of the year trophy, the biggest prize of the night. Chris Brown won male video of the year for "With You," while the Pussycat Dolls won for best dancing in a video with "When I Grow Up" and Linkin Park took home best rock video for "Shadow of the Day."
Lil Wayne won best hip-hop video for "Lollipop," while German rock outfit Tokio Hotel upset Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift to win the fan-voted best new artist honor.
Rihanna was the first performer at the 25th anniversary event, racing through "Disturbia" surrounded by dancers seemingly straight out of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The Jonas Brothers performed "Love Bug" on the Paramount Studios New York back lot, while a shirtless Lil Wayne was joined by Leona Lewis and T-Pain for a medley of his hits.
Wayne later joined Kid Rock for his recent smash "All Summer Long," and Christina Aguilera unveiled her new single, "Keeps Gettin' Better" in a medley with a steamy transformation of her early hit "Genie in a Bottle."
Kanye West closed the show by performing a new song, "Love Lockdown," expected to appear on his next album. The as-yet-untitled set is due by year's end via Def Jam.
Other performances, several of which took place on sets outside on the Paramount lot, were turned in by T.I. (first on his current Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Whatever You Like" and then with Rihanna on the new "Live Your Life"), Paramore, Perry (covering Madonna's "Like a Virgin") and Pink.
English comedian Brand peppered his commentary with off-color jokes about the Jonas Brothers' virginity, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's family life and Madonna's alleged affair with baseball star Alex Rodriguez. Presenter Jordin Sparks took exception to Brand's repeated joking about the Jonas Brothers' purity rings, saying that "not everybody wants to be a ****."

MTV: It's Britney Spears' Night At The VMAs, While Kanye West Ends The Show With A Bang
Britney won her first (and second, and third) Moonman, the Jonas Brothers flooded the fake streets of New York with screaming fans, Pink tossed a dude down a flight of steps, Weezy nearly lost his pants and host Russell Brand told a bunch of jokes you're probably still trying to untangle but, we can assure you, were very, very, very dirty. It was a historic night for rehabbing pop star Britney Spears, who not only picked up the first award of her career, but capped her hat trick with the ultimate prize: Video of the Year.
The 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards were full of those kinds of first, but perhaps the one people were looking forward to the most was the first VMA appearance by Spears since last year's notorious onstage debacle. And, to the delight of her fans, Spears knocked it out of the park, opening the show by repeatedly turning down some not-so-slick advances from "Superbad" funnyman Jonah Hill. Showing off some of her "How I Met Your Mother" comedy chops, Spears then shimmied to the stage, looking amazing in a silver, shimmering flapper dress, and welcomed the crowd to the show.

One More Time: Britney returns to MTV VMAs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Really, all Britney Spears needed to do was show up to the MTV Video Music Awards without stumbling and her appearance would have been considered a rousing success.
She did more than that — if barely. Still, it was enough for a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd even before she opened her mouth.
"Thank you so much," she said flatly. "Thank you for all the love."
Maybe the audience was simply excited to see a glimpse of Britney looking fab once again. The rebounding pop queen wore a short silver mini-dress with a plunging neckline, showcasing her svelte figure.
It was a far cry from last year, when her dishelveled, bumbling kickoff was widely panned as one of the worst in VMA history. But Spears was merely on hand this time to give a perfunctory introduction of Rihanna's opening song.
Moments later, she won her very first VMA when she nabbed best female video for "Piece of Me."
"I first wanna thank God for blessing me like this," Spears said, then left the stage quickly — though she still had a shot at two other awards, including video of the year.
Though she only spent a few seconds onstage at the top of the show, Spears did provide a few laughs during a pre-taped comedic segment with "Superbad" actor Jonah Hill. There were a few more laughs during British comedian Russell Brand's opening monologue, but the celeb audience seemed more nervous than amused, as Brand took aim at Madonna, President Bush and the virginity of teen sensations the Jonas Brothers.
Spears won't be the only act of the night looking for a second chance after a disappointing VMA experience last year. Kanye West is expected to close the two-hour ceremony; in Vegas, he had a Kanye-sized hissy fit backstage and vowed never to appear at the VMAs again after he didn't get a Moonman trophy despite being nominated several times. He also lashed out for being confined to performing at one of last year's suite parties instead of on the main stage.
[...]
The show was be held this year in Los Angeles, at Paramount Studios, where its various movie sets have the potential to be an interesting backdrop for the show and its performers.
