Despite the messy video and potential alienation Born This Way as a single caused toward the GP, I really wouldn't have it be any other way. It took serious confidence to release such a controversial song at her peak, and the have the words "gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgendered life" be #1 on the Hot 100 for 6 weeks is so encouraging. Born This Way HAD to be the first single for the era. I couldn't even imagine it any other way. (Wasn't Born This Way the first #1 song with the word "transgender" in it?)
