I think their target market is different. Adele's fans are mostly an older demographic. Taylor has younger fans. Tweens/teens are not running out to buy Adele's records or are 40 something's running out in droves to buy Taylor's. If you watch the footage of Adele's live performances, there were mostly age 35+ in the audience. I didn't see many 20 year olds. Different music formats...Taylor is Pop-Country, Adele is Adult-contemporary. Besides, Taylor promotes hard for her album sales.
Gaga flopped cause her album was panned by both critics and fans, not due to Katy. Katy only sold 286k albums, not some huge first week opening. By the time Gaga released her album , 3 weeks later Katy was selling 50-75k for the week.
at Ed Sheeran copying The Lord's strategy of having a "guessing game" on who each song on the album is about.
