I honestly think this song is still gonna smash! Its a summer song and summer hasn't even started yet. The radio updates are great and it seems to climb anywhere from 7-10 spots on itunes every week. And once sales pick up streams are going to take off. Dark Horse is dying down and the radio has to play a Katy Perry song. This. Too many people here are about instant gratification. Katy doesn't need to resort to desperate tactics unlike other more basic pop girls.
If ha team was smart, they'd shoot a tour performance of Birthday from the first date and air it at the BBMA's. They'd prolly allow it since Billboard loves Katy. That would be hitting two birds with one stone. Single + tour promo.
