I live in college dorms with football players who eat 5-6k calories a day. Somehow I doubt following their "diet" would make me healthier.

Eating cheeseburgers all the time is detrimental to your health. It causes strokes, heart attacks and all types of issues.
It all depends on your lifestyle. If you're eating 3000 calories+ a day with lots of sugars and fats but only have an office job then you probably will get fat unless you exercise. Though eating 5K calories+ a day may end up backfiring, the football players also do a lot of exercise to burn it off and keep their bodies healthy. If they have a lot of muscle and do a lot of exercise then they will need the extra calories to achieve and maintain a certain weight as well as to replace the calories lost through exercise.
I don't believe in fat shaming, but I do try and educate people and influence them so they aren't ignorant on the subject of diet and health.
