1. He absolutely needs to heighten his US airplay to keep going up in the biz. JT is a top male artist whose sound is and has been popular here for a number of years. He knows it appeals to the people, and by replicating that sound on just one of his songs in his own work he is too. Musicians do that all of the time.
2. Let's be honest, the vast majority has not heard Like I Love You. But would it really matter if they did? I really don't think that this is a Roar/Brave situation. The song may sound similar to you, but personally I'm not hearing much more that a similar style. Think of all the songs with aspects that sound a lot more alike then these two. (Shoutout to RT for ichi) 1R's Secrets instrumental sounds a heck of a lot like SLY's, as well as HG's sounds a lot like Don't Stop Believin'...yet I'm assuming you don't give equal treatment and go around saying she "played a bad joke" by releasing them? What about Halo and Already Gone? Put Your Hearts up (Ariana Grande) and What's Up?
3. He's going for an early/mid summer release this time around. Something like The A Team or Lego House simply would not work as a single in this time of year, it's not an "up" enough song. That's not to say that anything on his album that's surely more in tune with his older style won't be released, but maybe August or the fall would be a better fit for something like that.
And what was so wrong with his US visit? Just done some radios and performed a few songs on SNL. Typical promotion...

First: I come with peace! And second: Yes, I'm aware of things on that list.
1. Yes, he need to heighten his US airplay and yes that vast majority may not heard 'Like I Love You', but that majority knows JT and I don't thing that they want another one like him out there. Or a reference of him. That goes for Robin Thicke who also sounded like JT in some of his songs on his new album. And he's out there for years.
2. Roar/Brave, Halo/Already Gone and
Put Your Hearts Up/What's Up/Don't Worry, Be Happy are 1on1 or almost 1on1 the same. Which for me is a little confusing since the US is highly against copyright and yet there are not much/any law suits about it.
Now for Secrets/SLY and Don't Stop Believin'/HG. If you turn Secrets cello into piano you have an unfinished chord, which is the the main chord for SLY. That goes for Don't Stop Believin' as well with the differences that you already have a piano, but not a full piano chord. That's why they sound familiar. Not because one ripped it from the other. And let's not forget that the original versions of both HG and SLY are on guitar where they sound even more different from what they are now and compared to S and DSB.
3. There is no doubt that the perfect summer release is an up beat song, but let it be something that we never heard before. The song is not bad at all, but I'll need to listen it a gazillion times so I can erase the JT reference. It work with Amanda Jenssen when vocally her 'Volcano Swing' was used as the new Adele single.
For his US visit I'm not talking about his promotion campaign.I'm referring to his work with american producers from the general Pop/R&B and other mainstream american music and the influence that that music played on him and the song. Yes America is the mecca of the music industry and if you made it there you made it everywere, but you need to become better you not someone like you compared with the work of others.
