I think Adele's vocal tone is actually attributed to her smoking.

I honestly don't know why a singer would smoke though, and soooooo many of them do. It's like chopping half your fingers off if you're a pianist.

And it's always the ones that have the least to lose vocally that smoke the most, too.

Whitney was a chain smoker from the age of 16 till her death, it's amazing her voice was as beautiful and lasted as long as it did.

Very late to this discussion but

1) IASF was Beyonce's one and only attempt at being a pop girl. Her worst album to date but it was extremely successful.

2) Beyonce's voice is simply not meant for pop music... I'm sorry but she shines on R&B-influenced songs and sounds so strange doing pop music. XO doesn't work because of her voice. Countdown and End of Time don't work because of her voice.

3) She benefits greatly from her career with Destiny's Child. It gave her the platform to straddle both pop and urban. It's not like she was some random girl releasing a R&B album. As R&B got weeded out of the mainstream she was still able to make R&B music and keep a pop audience. In my opinion you can't analyze Beyonce's solo success without mentioning DC.

Regardless Beyonce's success is kind of unparalleled. She works extremely hard and it shows.
