Definitely, 'Bangerz' lol. It could've went one way or another but thankfully it turned out to be a success. The 'Blackout' era was pretty risky only because Britney released an album while she was going through that breakdown of hers. A few others were 'Stripped' (because of the Dirrrty video), 'Talk that Talk' (she was public about getting back with Chris) and I want to say 'In the Zone' but I'm not quite sure because while it may have been slightly controversial 'cause she was fresh off the Madonna stint, I think it worked in their favor.

Erotica is the obvious answer here. the sex book almost put her into irrelevancy.

American Life was a huge risk at the time. if she released it now it probably wouldn't have been as bad but 2001 was probably the worst possible time you could start critiquing the state of American politics. she's lucky that single era didn't completely ruin her career tbh.

Blackout was a risk in its own way. an album that barely had any promo behind it and when she was in the middle of having a very public meltdown it's a wonder it was as successful as it was and that the album was as GOOD as it was.

Bangerz was risky for Miley but i wouldn't put it anywhere near the other ones.

Because being sexual is an age old recipe for pop stars (Madonna, Janet, etc did it way before). Yes it was risky for X and Brit to do it since they had the bubble gum pop thing going, but it wasn't groundbreaking.

Musically, the risk comes in going in a different direction with your music. That's why Back to Basics is the riskier album. X abandoned her pop roots and went for that retro R&B sound.

I agree with this all but Blackout sonically isn't a risk. It was pure pop, produced by many established hit-makers. Even the fact that it was released during her breakdown isn't too much of a risk as people were interested.
