I disagree with the previous poster. Listen to her albums first, a greatest hits doesn't show off her discography well IMO because she has many album tracks that are better than any single that she's released.
If you're very young, start with The Velvet Rope, then janet., then All For You, then Damita Jo, then Rhythm Nation, then Control, then the rest. The only reason I say to save RN and Control until later is because you have to really be open to a sound that isn't really anything close to what is current to appreciate those albums.
