I've seen a lot of debate around this recently. Some gay people feel that, while they respect and emphasize with the transgender community, their struggle really has nothing to do with gay rights and shouldn't be hitched to their wagon. There's a great deal of sentiment that including transgender in every gay rights fight has deterred public acceptance and killed several legislative efforts.

What do you think? Should the gay and transgender rights movements be separate? Or is it wrong to try to exclude trans people from the greater equality gays are now enjoying?

I don't really know, I think that it is a seperate thing but it makes it better for transgenders because if they were excluded not many people would support transgender rights

Maybe being gay/lesbian/bisexual doesn't have have anything to do with being transgender... But why are some members of the "LGB community" so focused on segregating us? What's wrong with two minority groups sticking up for each other?

I hear people bitch about how "gay is the new black". About how people of color should stick up for gay people because we both face prejudice.

Why can't we do this for the trans community?

Trans people are a tiny minority and most people don't know or care at all about the problems they face. It may not be the same thing as being lgb ect but they get the same crap for the same reasons.

I don't see how we need to kick them out just because of some minor definition issue. They kind of need LGBT support even more than LGB people do.

If anything, LGBT should drop the L, the G, the B, and the T, and find a more inclusive word all by itself, perhaps "queer".

Different things, but both things deal with sexual nature. They face the same prejudices. That's why they belong in the movement. And some Trans people are in fact gay.

The T is there because we are all working towards the same goal. There is also the fact some trans are gay/bi/lesbian.

I'm sick of (usually) white gays that only care about issues that concern them. Glad to see most people don't think like that here.
