Yes. It's an optional procedure and it does not determine if you die or live. Just like people get cosmetic surgery.. They don't really need it to survive, they just want it to make them look "pretty".

That's a totally separate issue. You don't need plastic surgery the majority of the time, it's just for cosmetic purposes. Transsexual people however, have to go through life being trapped in the wrong body, they don't choose to be like that. They don't want to feel like that, it's just who they are. Where there is a National Health Service, I don't think the patient should pay for gender reassignment treatment and surgery as it's helping a medical condition.

However, I think it gets tricky beyond the actual genital surgery. The line between cosmetic and medical surgery is blurred and subjective. Does it just include breast implants/reduction? Does it include facial surgery to 'pass' more convincingly?

Maybe the solution is that everyone gets the same grant for the minimum service, and beyond is at the patients discretion? Kind of like NHS dentists where they'll fix your teeth with fillings etc. but they won't pay for white enamel fillings over metal on certain teeth because it's cosmetic.

The comments on here are borderline transphobic.

In short, a subsidized form of payment should be available for situations like this. It isn't a "trivial" matter, it's a serious issue. I would even contest for people who have sleep apnea/breathing problems to be able to opt for a surgical procedure to correct the matter. Same with women (or men) who need breast reduction for risk of a curvature problem.
