After listening a few times, I feel like the 2NE1 album as a whole can be described as ambitious, but it falls flat a lot of the time for me. The upbeat material on the album feels like it falls between Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and M.I.A's discography, with CL's solo track being the only track to reach the levels of the latter.
The album isn't without it's merits, though; "Crush" is a pretty cool intro for the rest of the album. The pre-chorus of "Gotta Be You" is great, as are the bridge and last chorus of "Happy" and "Scream", respectively. Like, there are a few nice twists and surprises to keep the album enjoyable as a whole, but they're not enough to sustain the album as "oh my, this is fantastic" all the way through.
I'm happy for y'all though, 2NE1 finally released an album, which is incredible in itself. I can't believe it's actually here. Also, I'm not writing off the album completely - I'll still listen and maybe something else will click with me in the upcoming weeks. Some of the best albums are like that. So this is all just based on a general first impression for the album we've been waiting too long for.
