Why was Katy not able to captivate the world like Gaga? This is a serious question, no shade intended as I love both artists.

I've always wondered why Gaga was able to sell 16 million albums during her peak while Katy only sold 6ish million. I mean, it's not like Gaga's T+FM album was drastically different to Teenage Dream. They both spawned huge hits, one after another, yet Gaga still sold 10 million more albums. It's not even about the album sales really, Gaga's singles were arguably bigger, she was more critically acclaimed, she was making more headlines, she won Grammys, etc. (I'm counting The Fame + Monster as one, just like TD and The Complete Something

So this leads me to the question: What was it that Gaga had that made her so huge and not Katy despite being in the feild? Both making similar music in the sense that it's in a way generic pop. Nothing too groundbreaking (bar Bad Romance, maybe Poker Face and E.T.) ever came out of either albums.

Its just that Gaga was more fresh, someone different. Katy was different yes, but Gaga was weird and people liked that.

My edit wasn't quick enough to evade you Azealia.

Kind of tying in with my original post, I think that Gaga was able to fully tap into the potential she had at once, but she wasn't able to fully control it. Katy, on the other hand, can't tap "fully" into her potential, but she can milk it slowly and have longevity.

If you're going to play it like that, then let's ask what Katy has that Gaga doesn't that allows her to still be successful while Gaga is struggling. And Gaga purposely dressed up in crazy outfits and acted odd to get more attention and make herself seem more interesting while Katy just acted normal so she wasn't talked about as much.
