There are sales and airplay figures from older decades, but reaching back to the '60s, they're less reliable and much harder to obtain. They don't explicitly state their methodology for the older charts in the archive, but I'd assume some combination of available sales/chart data and algorithms to estimate/correct for missing data.
I believe I read at some point that even their current formula uses estimations devised by MJDangerous for countries which don't report official numbers.
