Discussion: Should awards be discredited?

There are always a lot of rumors going around about award shows being rigged - whether it's the Teen Choice Awards or the Grammy Awards, the rumors are always there. The fact that there's no transparency when it comes to voting results makes it even more difficult to tell if results are legit or if there has been bribing involved.

Do you think awards should be discredited when it comes to measuring the success of artists? Surely looking at sales (albums, singles, tour tickets, etc) should be the best indication as to how relevant and successful an artist is, no?

Yes they should. They are an amusing footnote but some people summarize their careers by listing the awards they have won, it's ridiculous. It means nothing to have earned the favor of a handful of people.

a lot of them yes, others like the Grammys should be more transparent in the voting process.

The Grammys are a lot more unpredictable than the TCAs, KCAs, etc. The formula for the fan-voted awards is:

-1D will win every award they're nominated for.
-Bieber will lose to 1D but win all of his other nominations.
-It's anyone's game when the pop girls go at each other.

To discredit someone just because they don't have some certain award is really stupid. They are nice and all but they shouldn't count too much since most are rigged.

Especially fan-voted awards. They are always a mess like when they make sure 1D and Bieber are in the same category and you have to vote via twitter so they get the attention and the 10M votes. In generally especially those represent nothing for me. Those who attend get one, those who have many fangirls who are willing to waste the entire day get one and so on.

No, but I think their worth shouldn't be hyped up to extreme levels. They are just... trophies... and many artists are just trying to stay alive and take care of their people...

And they don't have no awards for that...

The KCAs never put 1D and Bieber against each other. Remember how "What Makes You Beautiful" won a KCA last year? It was up against "Call Me Maybe," "Gangnam Style," and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." I still can't believe out of all songs they nominated "Gangnam Style" for the award, and yet Bieber's "Boyfriend" got snubbed. I assume didn't nominate "Boyfriend" because, in all likelihood, it wouldn't have been able to beat "What Makes You Beautiful." Bieber probably isn't getting any nomination at this year's KCAs, so he should be lucky that he's never lost a KCA. Unless, of course, they nominate him with the intent on having him lose for the first time, and what better way to do that than by having him lose his award to 1D.

Wasn't Justin not attending? That's probably why he wasn't nominated in the first place.
Let me quick correct my statement: They make sure Bieber OR 1D (or another upcoming overhyped male teen singer) are up against each other.
Let's not forget MTV VMAs Song Of The Summer category. Best Song Ever JUST came out and they put it next to songs like We Can't Stop, Get Lucky and Come & Get It for favorite summer song I mean.

Wait...Bieber OR 1D are up against each other? I'm confused. Bieber never had to face the Jonases in the KCAs. They actually started losing KCAs to the Black Eyed Peas once their hype died down. Maybe the KCAs will give Bieber one last nomination this year and rig the award so he can lose to Bruno or someone else.

Also, 1D won the VMA fair and square. It was quite obvious when MTV actually showed the results to everyone. 1D had 8 million votes to Miley's 4 million.
