If I was in charge I'd leave the fifty gender options but add a new "sex" category with only two options: male or female.

I'ma need a list of these supposed 50+ Genders, preferably with descriptions. No way I can believe there's nearly that many.
I can think of 5, at a push, and one of those is "Prefer not to say".

I'm going to guess they'll include people with personality disorders who identify themselves as more than one person.

People in this thread are so dense and insensitive.
What Facebook is doing is great.

Good for Facebook, I have quite a few trans friends who'll be elated to hear about this.
at the presumably cis people who think this is unnecessary or dumb

Ok so basically there's this idea that gender is binary, mainly in western society and mainly because we've built constructs around assigning gender roles to people who we perceive as male or female. Now, while sex is mostly binary (you can only be male or female, although some people are intersex and have multiple sex organs), gender is considerably more fluid.
You don't have to have a dick and balls to identify or present as a man, and you don't need a vagina + uterus to identify or present as a woman.
From there, you have a lot of people who ecist outside of that binary, trans* or not. So you've got people who identify as multiple gendered, genderfluid, or rarely agendered (the lack of a gender identity). Their sex remains tied to their organs, but their gender (which is what society is really worried about at the end of the day) is their own to play with.
50 seems excessive, but when you consider gender to be a spectrum between man and woman, there's hypothetically infinite possibilities.

I don't know.
I only refer to them as male or female. Didn't think there were more.

So you could force trans men, trans women, and non binary trans people to identify with terms that make them uncomfortable? If a person with a penis says they are a trans* person and identify as a woman, regardless of if they've had gender re-assignment surgery, they are a woman, and no arbitrary application of the binary to sex will change the fact that they were born a woman. This applies vice versa for trans men as well. (I believe there are some trans people on this board so if any of this sounds off track please correct me)

Good for people who don't identify themselves with either gender.
This should be done in all services, to be honest. It must suck for a non-binary person.
