Gaga and her team OBVIOUSLY thought they had a huge hit when they made Applause (and ARTPOP). This whole "I don't write for the charts" came later, as excuse for the underperformance.

Well tbh Born this Way was kind of dead overall at this time after the album release and Artpop has some hope at least radio wise

It is inoffensive for the most part. About even or a little bit less than her gay standard. I'd say probably 60/40 with the gays in her favor. Especially following Born This Way. But I think ARTPOP is doing a decent job in getting girls back on her side. Applause is beloved in my parts.

But to think if she stretched and milked The Fame era for as long as she could (a la the Teenage Dream era) then the Fame Monster would have been truly indestructible. She didn't really build up her commercial image before going straight into the "I'm on top of the world bow down" era.

I think that was before Applause was the lead single though. Didn't she say in an interview it was Sexxx Dreams they had been planning to release for a long time? (I know you don't like Sexxx Dreams, but it would've made me **** my pants )


In the end though Applause was a decent choice for lead single. There aren't many other viable singles on the album. I wish DWUW (ft. Xtina) had gotten that lead treatment though.

It was sad how she mistreated it at the BTWB. This is a song she should be singing fully & there's so much to do with it performance-wise. She should perform in crutches and cause controversy, have her put it as Emma's rise to glory.

It was Gypsy until they decided on Applause.

It's the best performing indie christian gospel album by an avant garde art teacher, gay rights activist and philanthropist of 2013 though.
