Old Gaga wasn't relatable either lyrically. 'I want your ugly, I want you disease'... People just loved it because she was an enigmatic character and the lyrics adhered to that perception; they became invested in the character.

I agree, i don't necessarily want more
relatable lyrics but i DO want better lyrics clothed with metaphors. Poker Face lyrics sure were relatable but that's not what made them epic imo, it was that they were a metaphor for something else. Aura is the only song on ARTPOP that serves me that kind of metaphor. GUY isn't a metaphor but its lyrics are pretty awesome because they're a play on words.. Gypsy kinda has a metaphor but it's way too literal. DWUW kinda hides its meaning (the critics thing is mentioned minimally) but it's not a metaphor. And then there are the blatant lyrics of Sexxx Dreams, Dope, Applause etc. that should have been way more artfully crafted.
