Not encouraging her "you don't understand my art" vibes, but the simple reality is that if you want popularity - you go for the lowest common denominator. With videos, people just want an entertaining watch that doesn't make them think much and for you to look pretty while doing it. If you can do something memorable in the process - you're golden. Step 1: Let the song inspire a concept/story. Step 2: Tell the story. Step 3: Come up with a potentially iconic look/scene. Done. Next.

BTW had the potential to be brilliant with that epic intro, but they ignored the narrative they had just set up immediately afterwards. If they only wanted beautiful visuals, they should have cut the VO and added in the surreal colourful shots that leaked a year later. Judas had the story down and was a great video (minus obvious green screen shots), but the song just wasn't on par. Y&I was the beginning of in-cohesive mess. The video shouldn't need explanation - if it's not obvious what's going on, you aren't telling the story well. MTN couldn't decide what it was with that intro being entirely unnecessary and her speeding through the key explanatory action of her 'struggle to make it' in the few second montage at the end. Applause had potential with the visual style and Pierrot concept but it was just a series of moving fashion stills in the end.

I agree except with BTW & MTN. They both do have an easily understandable story lines that is inspired by the song and has killer visuals to boot. I'm not sure if you just don't like them because the songs didn't help her career, but as for the other objective criticisms I wholeheartedly agree. I wish honestly she could hire people like I&V along with a professional director. The professional director to help her organize a cohesive comprehensible story line + I&V for those epic visuals (Applause has her best visuals honestly of any video in recent history imo )

edit: could they have been better? of course. Telephone could have been better (her best video imo). MTN should've had that intro while the song was playing and just cut out all the dialogue and made it a shorter video in its entirety.. But that doesn't not make them killer videos.

Old Gaga wasn't relatable either lyrically. 'I want your ugly, I want you disease'... People just loved it because she was an enigmatic character and the lyrics adhered to that perception; they became invested in the character.

I agree, i don't necessarily want more relatable lyrics but i DO want better lyrics clothed with metaphors. Poker Face lyrics sure were relatable but that's not what made them epic imo, it was that they were a metaphor for something else. Aura is the only song on ARTPOP that serves me that kind of metaphor. GUY isn't a metaphor but its lyrics are pretty awesome because they're a play on words.. Gypsy kinda has a metaphor but it's way too literal. DWUW kinda hides its meaning (the critics thing is mentioned minimally) but it's not a metaphor. And then there are the blatant lyrics of Sexxx Dreams, Dope, Applause etc. that should have been way more artfully crafted.
