I agree. Max Martin only sounds 'generic' because he has been so successful, such that it is his sound that has become the mainstream sound at the top of the charts for more than a decade.
It is like Taylor being regarded as a 'mainstream' artist, even though she is a female singer-songwriter from the Country Music world, who writes her own songs, largely by herself, with a confessional, diaristic approach to songwriting and all while being on an independent startup record label.
All of those things are very different to most other artists at the top of the charts, who are pop stars who usually employ massive teams writing their songs, are on major labels, and many being products of reality TV shows and who use sex to sell their records.
Taylor is only 'mainstream' because her songs have proven incredibly popular, making her the biggest American artist of her time.
