the only evidence of struggle is the cramped apartment but we all know how much Beyonce exagarates struggle. It was probably cramped compared to the mansion they lived in. Financial difficulties also probably meant things were just different to normal.
I'm sure there was a time when they had some mild discomfort but none of that sounds like struggle considering Matthew could just go back to selling medical equipment and problem fixed.
