Roar by Katy Perry
When "Roar" first came out, I was disappointed. As a former Katy Perry stan, it was the first lead single that I didn't enjoy. It grew on me, thanks to it being played on every commercial and every radio station. It's one of the best songs on Prism. |
| |
Numb (feat. Rick Ross) by Cassie
I've always enjoyed the occasional Cassie song, and even though she has released an album in 7 years, I still check up on her every once in awhile. When I first heard RockaByeBaby, "Numb" was an immediate standout track. |
| |
We Can't Stop by Miley Cyrus
"We Can't Stop"; the song that forever changed Miley's career and image. Unlike most people, I loved it from first listen. I loved the video and the messy performances. It's a really catchy song, but maybe I'm biased since it was meant to be a Rihanna song. |
| |
Problem by Natalia Kills
When Natalia changed to a harsher, noisier sound, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. After "Controversy", which I loved, I was afraid she wouldn't top it for me; but she did. "Problem" is one of those songs that sounds better on full blast. |

This Is How We Do by Katy Perry
"This Is How We Do" is my favorite song on Prism. When I first heard it, I was so happy that Katy made a song like it. It's everything "Last Friday Night" should have been. My only hope is that she releases it as a single and it smashes. |

Cherry Pepsi by Saint Pepsi
Okay, "Cherry Pepsi" isn't even a real song. It's a remix of Sister Ledge's 1983 single "B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Baby)". Saint Pepsi is a vaporwave/chillwave producer who I discovered through a friend over the summer. I've had "Cherry Pepsi" on repeat ever since. |
| |
Time Will Tell by Blood Orange
"Time Will Tell" is basically just the choruses of "It Is What It Is" and "Champagne Coast" combined into one song. It has quickly become my favorite song on Cupid Deluxe. |
| |
Sh*t, Man! (feat. Angel Haze) by Skylar Grey
I never thought that I would enjoy a song about an unexpected pregnancy so much. I love Angel Haze, and I love Skylar Grey, so I naturally enjoyed "Sh*t, Man!". Angel's verse about pressure to abort, but still having hope for the future, gets me every time. |
| |
M.O.N.E.Y. by The 1975
"M.O.N.E.Y." is another dark song disguised with a "happy" beat. Lyrically, it discusses addiction (sex and drugs, primarily). It was an immediate standout, and remains one of my favorite songs on the album. |
| |
Recover by CHVRCHES
"Recover" was the first song that I ever heard by CHVRCHES. I was listening to the radio one day and heard it, and ended up changing the channel halfway through the song. Over the next few weeks, I heard it more often and ended up liking it. |

You're Not The One by Sky Ferreira
I have such a love/hate relationship with "You're Not The One", only because of the way Sky teased us with it for the better half of a year. I must have played the live version a few hundred times. After we finally got the studio version, I fell in love with the song all over again. It's still one of my favorite songs on the album. |
| |
II. Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (feat. Azealia Banks) by Childish Gambino
I never thought I'd see the day when Azealia would be singing on a song with no verse of her own, but I like it. Her vocals compliment the song, and even though it's a really weird song, I love it. |
| |
New Slaves by Kanye West
Kanye really pushed the envelope with "New Slaves". What made me like it so much was the line, "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower". It's so bold and outrageous. It's definitely a standout track on Yeezus. |
| |
Bad (Remix) (feat. Rihanna) by Wale
When the original version of "Bad" came out and was being played on the radio, I didn't like it. I didn't give it a chance. But when Rihanna's version came out, I fell in love with it. It was the perfect song for Rihanna. Plus, Wale's new verses were a million times better than in the original. |
| |
PrimeTime (feat. Miguel) by Janelle Monáe
"PrimeTime" was one of the only tracks on The Electric Lady that I didn't like. I've never cared for Miguel, so I overlooked the song. When I saw her live last month, she totally destroyed the song; in a good way. I now have a new found appreciation for it. It's one of the best ballads of the year. |

Can't bring myself to love Blood Orange as much as everyone else, but It Is What It Is was cute.
