It's not completely an impulse buy, I think it might be fueled by positive word of mouth too. If the album was ******, it wouldn't be selling so well. Most people don't really read reviews, it's mostly based on what the people in your circle are loving. If the quality wasn't there, it wouldn't be spreading like it is.

Exactly. Good music will sell and 'BEYONCÉ' is a damn good album. Impulse sales drove the album to number one, but it's staying there because the album is worth every damn cent.

The word of mouth about how AMAZING the album is what's going to keep it selling. People LOVE the album

661K or below is what I see tbqh. Anything higher and I will suspect some foul play.

The album is a step up artistically for her, so kudos. However, there are very little to no worldwide smashes on this album (XO and Blow are pushing it). There is no Single Ladies. I think both Beyonce' and her label realized this, and after what happened with 4, had to devise a way to get people to buy this album without the people who want to hear big pop hooks being turned off. Hence, no singles and a surprise release.

Well ATRL said Single Ladies would flop so.

Do I hear any predictable, obvious smashes? No. But that's a good thing because she really stuck to that comment about "quick lil singles". At the end of the day the general public is constantly changing and shifting. Who knows what will be a hit anymore.

You can't always predict.

@ people acting like the point of this album was to get another Single Ladies.
Single Ladies already exists, Crazy In Love already exists, Irreplaceable already exists... she's got many a hit, and her fair share of massive global hits. She doesn't need to replicate that in any way. She doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore.

You're doing a little bit too much assuming for my taste.

Plus people who "want to hear big pop hooks" aren't the people Beyonce caters too and most importantly are the kind of people that check out a Rihanna/Katy Perry first. Listeners weren't sitting waiting for POP from Bey. She's never done POP. This album is as far away from POP as possible. If their plan was to not alienate POP buyers... Why would they release such an urban/R&B album in the first place? Why would they do it and then according you scramble for a plan to "pull the wool over buyers eyes"? Seems like way too much trouble to me.

I doubt the people who want POP were the first ones impulsively buying this surprise release. They'd wait it out. They know what kinda artists deliver the stuff they want.

It hasn't. It's predicted to sell that much or more.

What we know is that it's sold >500K by the end of Saturday

Beyonce has done Pop before (looks at Halo's Grammy).

I meant pop as in catchy hooks, not pop as in the genre. Did Beyonce' want to make a big commercial album? Probably not. Did she want it to flop/under perform? Who knows if she cared, but her label/whoever paid for those 17 videos definitely cared. Would she have sold this much by releasing XO and Drunk on Love as the first singles as she is doing now? No way in the world. I agree she made the album she wanted to make, but I highly doubt she was going to pull same strategy as before with an even less commercial album.
