NBC's "The Sound of Music" Draws Huge Overnight Ratings - Headline Planet

How it fared in the pivotal adults 18-49 demographic remains to be seen, but NBC’s “The Sound of Music” definitely attracted an impressive quantity of households.

The three-hour broadcast of the musical classic drew a whopping 10.9 overnight metered market rating Thursday. Since the skew is unclear, the monstrous overnight does not promise a monstrous adults 18-49 number, but it does forecast a huge total viewership number.

Not even CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” which usually dominates Thursday night, outperformed NBC’s musical in the overnight numbers. “Big Bang” drew a 10.5 in its usual 8-8:30PM timeslot.

While “Sound” seemed like a safe bet to draw when it was first announced, limited interest in last week’s “Making Of” special slightly tempered expectations for the live musical’s performance. Based on how this Thursday’s broadcast performed, it should not have created that pessimism.

Ratings Breakdown:
Given the low benchmark for comparison, there was every reason to believe the live production of “The Sound of Music” would ignite NBC. But a 10.9 rating/18 share in the household overnights from 8-11 p.m. is more than anyone could have expected. And it proves both the value, and importance, of event type programming on network television. It is still very relevant.

“The Sound of Music Live!” opened with a 10.9/18 in the 8 p.m. half-hour, which was eight percent above the 10.1/16 for normally undefeated “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS (10.1/16). And it ended with a still stellar 10.5/17 at 10:30 p.m., with a first-place finish in each of the six half-hours as follows:

8:00 p.m.: 10.9/18
8:30 p.m.: 11.5/18
9:00 p.m.: 11.3/18
9:30 p.m.: 11.2/18
10:00 p.m.: 10.5/17
10:30 p.m.: 10.0/17

Comparably, “The Sound of Music Live!” bested the year-ago combination of “30 Rock,” “Up All Night,” “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Rock Center With Brian Williams” by a mammoth 319 percent, with similar overnight gains over the current season line-up. The bottom line: This is a massive win for both NBC and the entire television landscape, and proof that network television can still steam up the water-cooler. Congratulations, NBC!

The three-hour performance of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical delivered 18.5 million viewers and a great 4.6 rating among adults 18-49. This is by far NBC’s strongest non-sports Thursday night performance this season; the network all sort of ratings headaches on Thursdays this fall given its troubled comedy block.Sound of Music was Thursday’s most-watched show and tied CBS’ Big Bang Theory in the demo to win the night.

While skepticism about NBC’s Sound of Music stunt ran high, viewers were generally enthusiastic about last night’s performance, which went off without a hitch.

To all the haters
- Carrie did such an incredible job. Tell me when your faves can both act and sing flawlessly on live television in front of 18.5 million viewers.
- The show is the remake of the original Broadway show on live television, not the classic movie of Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews is not the original Maria von Trapp. If there were internet at 1965, Julie Andrews would've received the same negative comments from the fans of the original Broadway musical about not being Mary Martin.
- The target of the show is the young kids/adults who have no interested in watching a 1965 movie, not close-minded old grumpy mean people. The demographics of people who watched the show prove that. 30, 40 years from now, when they do something like this again, there will be people who make a fuss about the new act is not Carrie Underwood.
- There're people who will watch the original show because they're impressed with this live event. That's the ultimate purpose of the show: to make young people know and love the classic musical/movie.
- Carrie hasn't lost anything. Haters were not gonna watch it from the very first place, and would keep on dragging it. People who wanted to watch, or watched it with an open mind, absolutely loved it.
- In fact, Carrie has gained a lot of praises and respect from the critics and other celebrities for doing such a phenomenal job. If there's someone who wins the most from this, it's Carrie, not the haters.
- Last but certainly not least, Carrie has all the support she needs from her amazing fans. She doesn't give a **** about her haters.
