True, there was no twitter or social networking sites, no internet. But when Britney and Beyonce debuted the internet was still pretty new. Neither had social media. To this day Beyonce is only really active on Tumblr and Instagram as an extension of what she posts on that. They are not products of the internet in the way that Gaga, Miley, Justin Bieber, etc. are. Not to mention that Beyonce NEVER interacts with fans online. I can't think of one time aside from her open letters on her website.
I'm not sure how you know about the old Hollywood system but there is A LOT you're missing here. There was no internet or gossip bloggers but there were gossip columnists. The Hollywood Studios purposely put out rumours, set up press events, had control over their actor's looks, accents, roles, almost EVERYTHING. To say that Audrey and Marilyn broke down barriers is a lie. They were successful artists backed by even more successful film studios. They did not "manage to stay relevant", the studios managed to keep them relevant.

Now wait a second. First of all, if it wasn't for Marilyn, neither of our faves would be considered sexy. Beyoncé would be too fat and Britney's body shape would be "wrong." Marilyn revolutionized body image and sex appeal for women, along with starring in the greatest and most influential comedy of all-time,
Some Like It Hot. If she was just a product, how come Jean Harlow couldn't do what she did?
Audrey created the glamour-chic look that both of our faves still use and is an actual feminist icon from when barriers existed to a much heavier extent. How can people argue Beyoncé is a feminist icon and then bash Marilyn/Audrey?
As for these girls being a product, it can be argued that every mainstream star is because they release good for purchases. As for other people pulling the strings, didn't Beyoncé put in like 8 Grammy nominations from
4 and lose them all in 2011 when she submitted for the 2012 Grammys but when she brought Matthew Knowles, a committee member, back on her team in 2012 and only put in one submission, she won the category?
