That's cause she was achieving something historical with all those #1s from one album, so they focused on getting as many singles there as possible. But in general it doesn't matter, and her streak was already broken with TOTGA. They didn't try to push Wide Awake there either.

Right? "Roar" sounds like it's going to easily connect with the GP and "Applause" sounds (from what we have) surprisingly commercial. It's basically a given that both will be huge and they'll probably sell very similarly worldwide in the end. The US peak isn't going to have much of an impact on either song's final success or potential legacy.

I'm still skeptical about #1, but 1D's debut with their last song was weaker than Roar's or Applause (I assume both can scan over 322K) and they managed #2 peak so both of them should debut at 2 unless their lead over BL is enough to overtake it (which I consider unlikely).

Gaga will debut ahead of BL, Katy will reach #1 in her fourth week. That is, unless Katy's song is released to YouTube or Spotify for streaming, in which case it's not impossible for her to pull a #1 in her first full week, though it would still be highly unlikely.

They care about making money. Hitting #1 on the Hot 100 doesn't come with any sort of financial bonus.
