Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga have the same problem.Gaga feels her videos are "more artistic" if they're longer. If you're going to increase the length of a music video or song, then it damn well better ELEVATE the work, not hinder it. Gaga doesn't know how to edit herself to ELEVATE the work, so her videos always look contrived or overworked or nonsensical.
When an artist like Kanye West or Coldplay or Muse have song lengths 7 to 10 minutes long, it always, always elevates the tracks and you can tell (and can hear) that there is a REASON behind it. Do you want to know what Justin Timberlake's reasoning was for his long, overworked, and unnecessary track lengths on "The 20/20 Experience?"
Justin Timberlake: "When we were making the record I said, 'If Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin can do 10-minute songs and Queen can do 10-minute songs then why can't we?' We'll figure out the radio edits later.''
Wow,
REALLY?
REALLY, though? So, Justin Timberlake's reason for making long tracks was because "they did it, so I want to." As an artist, that kind of thinking and approach is
TOXIC. It's a recipe for disaster because it's not coming from a place of thought or expression. It's just a quick and lazy reason to do something to make your music (or your artwork) APPEAR more "artistic" when really it's contrived. Justin Timberlake's long tracks served no purpose and did not ELEVATE his songs, either.
