Well, can you think of any other recent examples, because the fact that you only mentioned one is kind of reinforcing King of Pop's point.
That said, Do I think Rih's had to work harder for that cover because she's a woman of color? Yeah, because I honestly believe that a white pop star with an album as massive as GGGB would have covered RS. How strange was it that she didn't get the cover during that era, especially considering that she had sold something like 5M albums prior with her first two eras.
I understand why she didn't get the cover during Rated R and era because it didn't really smash hard in the States (ditto for TTT LP with the exception of WFL), but Unapologetic is a little different. Her last SNL outing showed real improvement. She got her first #1 album the US. Diamonds was critically well received, and Stay will be as well. These singles are a bit of a departure from her usual dance pop tracks and show growth. RS staff notices these things, and they're starting to give her the respect she deserves.
