I don't think she's at all worthy of being so,but YES,she is.Don't know for how long she'll continue to keep that mark alive though, cause after the first 5 yrs of her career, she hasn't added anything of value to the pop culture(bar the albums),and it doesn't look like she has the capability to do so in the future either. But so far, this fact is undeniable, she truly is the most significant(which I think is a bad thing, but that's another subject of matter).
Britney Spears represents the dawn of a new type of female popstar. The hyper-manufactured, bubblegum pop sensation with plastic, all-American sheen that was equal part celebrity to singer. Everything about her is for entertainment value. She is/was the product of her era, completely built for consumption. It's fitting that she's now a celebrity judge on a TV talent show called "The X Factor".
Furthermore, she is the face of contemporary celebrity culture. Her breakdown will be documented and referred to as a key study of the rise and fall of fame.

This might be true but she actually started as someone who really cared so much about her career. She is until now but not as much as before.
Important? Ummmm, I guess it can depend on how you wanna define what is important and what isn't. I voted no, but I'm kinda realizing I might have been wrong. Eminem and Kanye West are up there with her in terms of "importance." I consider them pop stars.

I will give you Eminem. But Kanye West is a local act.
The truth of it is is that she basically inspired the wave of pop stars who she is still in the running with. She has inspired a slew of British artists such as Lily Allen and Marina and the Diamonds and continues to make her mark. People walk onto the stage of talent shows and say they want to be as big as Britney Spears in five years because they know she is a legend and an icon.
I didn't grow up listening to Lady Gaga, she is a newbie in comparison. Britney has remained prominent from my infancy to adulthood.
